MUMBAI: Thousands of commuters were stranded across Mumbai today as most train services were suspended after heavy rain battered the city overnight. All schools have been ordered to close by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city's civic agency, which has issued an alert, advising people against stepping out.
More showers have been forecast through the day with a high tide of 4.60 metres around 2 pm today.
With tracks completely waterlogged, operations have been suspended on the Harbour line. Train services have also been stopped between the busy Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and the Kurla suburb on the Central line. The Western Railways is running staggered services till Andheri.
Around 70-80 lakh people travel everyday by local trains, considered the lifeline of the city.
The Railways, too, have advised commuters to travel only if necessary.
"Suburban services are affected due to heavy rains and water-logging in several areas in Mumbai Central and Matunga. It is advised to all that commuters may travel only in case of emergency," Western Railway said in a press release.
Massive traffic jams were reported across the city. The city's BEST buses have also altered their routes in view of flooding and heavy water-logging reported at several areas including Dadar, Parel, Byculla, Mahim, Santacruz, Juhu, Worli, Jogeshwari and Hindmata.
Residents immediately took to Twitter to warn others.
